Improvements are to I-275 from the Hillsborough
River north to Floribraska Avenue and I-4 from the I-275/I-4 merge
to west of 19th Street, about 2.7 miles. The project is being
designed to provide safety and operational improvements.
DESIGN IMPROVEMENTS IN BRIEF
- An additional lane will be added on the northbound and southbound
I-275 from the Hillsborough River to the I-275/I-4 merge providing
four lanes in both directions.
- A fifth lane will be added on northbound I-275 for the Ashley
Street on-ramp to eliminate the short merge area.
- A long acceleration/taper for the right side Orange/Scott
Street on-ramp to I-4 will be provided to extend the merge.
- A local auxiliary off-ramp system will be constructed to
reduce the weaving in the interchange.
- A second lane will be added on the southbound I-275 off-ramp
to the local auxiliary ramp system to enhance operations.
- The existing Ashley Street off-ramp will be relocated from
the left side to the right side of eastbound I-4 with an auxiliary
lane to 21st Street to reduce the number of weave movements.
- The southbound I-275 flyover ramp exit will be shifted northward
to the Floribraska Avenue bridge to improve sight distance.
SCHEDULE
Design plans for the interchange improvements
are nearing completion; right-of-way plans are complete. The right-of-way
acquisition process is underway and construction began on October,
2002.
